Tardigrade, (phylum Tardigrada), also called water bear or moss piglet, any of more than 1,100 species of free-living tiny invertebrates belonging to the phylum Tardigrada. They are considered to be close relatives of arthropods (e.g., insects, crustaceans). Tardigrades … Tardigrades are fascinating microscopic animals, exhibiting a number of unusual characteristics. They are found in a wide variety of easily accessible terrestrial microhabitats, such as soil, leaf litter, mosses and lichens. They are also commonly found in freshwater and marine communities. The Biology of Tardigrades is the only modern comprehensive account of marine and freshwater tardigrades.
